Australian Woman Discovers 2ft Earthworm

It would have to be a pretty big early bird to get that worm!

An Australian woman discovered a gigantic 2ft earthworm after it was driven above ground by torrential rains.

Kelli Mace posted a photo on Facebook of her holding the huge creature with two sticks after it emerged from the earth around Tamborine Mountain, Queensland, and it was soon picked up by Australian news outlets.

The area, which is covered in rain forest, is known for the massive species of worm, known as Digaster longmani, and which can grow up to 3ft long.

Usually they remain deep underground, but heavy rain across the Gold Coast area last week has driven the creatures from their borrows.

The region on the east coast of Australia saw particularly heavy rainfall on Friday when over an inch fell in 36 hours.

How To Catch Worms - worm grunting

Calling All Worms! This surprisingly simple technique will unearth some surprising results! Find an area of loose, slightly moist soil (the dirt under a log or landscape timber works well) and push a 12 to 18 inch-long stick two to three inches into the ground. Vigorously rub another stick from side to side against it for about 2 minutes and watch as any worms in the vicinity wriggle to the surface. Try several areas in the yard to see which ones are the hottest worm hangouts.

Joke Of The Day: Worms

Rubber Chicken Jimmy’s chemistry teacher wanted to teach his ninth grade class a lesson on the evils of liquor so he produced a glass of water, a glass of whiskey, and two worms. “Observe” he told his class as he began to put one of the worms in the glass of water. This worm swam about freely and looked as happy as can be.

He then put the second worm in the glass of whiskey and it to swam about for a moment but then started to shake and fell to the bottom dead.

“Now” he asked “What lesson can we learn from this experiment?”

“That’s easy,” replied Jimmy. “Drink whiskey and you won’t get worms!”
