Mathematical Smilies

Mathematical Smilies

For those who don’t get it or are stuck on what these mean:

Following down the Left side column we have inverse, square, cube, sine (sign), and log.

The Right side’s a little more complicated.

The first one is “real” – when applied to a complex number – that is, one with real and imaginary (designated by some factor times “i”) parts – you take the real component only and drop the imaginary component. i.e. You drop the i’s (eyes). “Imag” (imaginary) is the converse of “real”, so that would be only the i’s.

The inverted triangle is a math operator called “grad”, and it takes the gradient of a function. When applied to a vector – and we know it’s a vector because of the cross product operator – it’s known as the “curl”.

Then finally, we have “root”.

Yeah, I know – if you have to explain it, it’s not funny.

Is This The Ultimate Woman?

Technology merges best parts of some of the world’s most beautiful celebrities.

Each stands alone as one of the world’s most beautiful women.

So put them all together and the result would surely be the ultimate head-turner. Or would it?

Well now, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, you can judge for yourself.

After a poll to discover which parts of female stars women most admired and desired, an image of what is being called the ‘ultimate celebrity’ has been created.

Beneath the Duchess of Cambridge’s tumbling shiny hair, you will find the chocolate brown eyes of singer Cheryl Cole, the nose of actress Kate Beckinsale and the cheeks of fellow Hollywood star Keira Knightley.

Eyebrows come courtesy of Transformers actress Megan Fox and the perfect chin is apparently found on still another actress, Gwyneth Paltrow.

Those bee-stung lips could only be Angelina Jolie’s, and the ultimate celebrity’s decolletage belongs to busty TV presenter Kelly Brook.

The inclusion of Prince William’s new wife in the poll of more than 9,000 people – by online beauty retailer Feel Unique – is no surprise.

Her perfectly coiffeured curls have been credited with everything from a boom in hair products to an increase in women dyeing their hair brown.

Japanese Company Creates Super-Realistic 3D Face Replicas

If you’ve ever dreamed of getting a super-realistic replica of your face for whatever reason, here’s your chance: a Japanese company called REAL-f [JP] is creating so-called 3DPFs (“3 Dimension Photo Forms”), copies of human faces “in 3D”. The startup offers two versions, a mask type replica and the so-called mannequin type, a replica of the head.

The way it works is that REAL-f first shoots pictures of a person’s face from various positions and imprints the image on vinyl chloride resin stretched over a mold. According to the company, it’s unique production technology makes sure that even details like the iris and blood vessels are replicated accurately (see the pictures to judge for yourself).
